- In 1969, Ruth Suzuki, also known professionally as Ruth Huang-Suzuki, through the help of the late Mr. and Mrs. Shingo Murakami, well known elders in the community, gathered a group of people who were eager to sing.The group held weekly singing sessions at the Murakami residence.
- In 1970,with the assistance of the late Mr. Alfred Arakawa, a Board of Director of JCCA (Japanese Canadian Citizens Association), a chorus was formed under the auspices of JCCA, as JCCA Music Group.Ruth Suzuki continued to lead the group as the Music Director.
- In 1973, this group became "The Sakura Singers".
- In 2006, 36 years after its inception, The Sakura Singers was incorporated into a society under the B.C. Society Act.
